by Allison May 21,2025

Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is set to hit the big screen in a surprising movie adaptation, with renowned director Michael Bay at the helm. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has enlisted Bay, known for his work on the Transformers series, to direct and produce this new venture. Joining him as a producer is the talented Sydney Sweeney, adding star power to the project. The screenplay will be crafted by Jayson Rothwell, though details about the plot remain under wraps, and no release date has been announced yet.

On the Sega front, Toru Nakahara, a key figure in the production of the Sonic movies, will also serve as a producer for the OutRun film. Additionally, Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi will oversee the project, ensuring the game's essence is captured on screen.

Originally launched in 1986, OutRun was a groundbreaking arcade driving game designed by the legendary Yu Suzuki. Over the years, it has seen numerous versions and ports, with a significant sequel released in 2003. Although the series has been relatively quiet in recent times, the most recent release was OutRun Online Arcade by Sumo Digital in 2009.

Sega has been actively tapping into its rich catalog for new projects, with fresh takes on classics like Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi currently in development. The company has also ventured into media adaptations, with the Sonic movies achieving massive success and the Like a Dragon: Yakuza series making a splash on Amazon last year. The trend of video game movies continues to grow, with hits like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the upcoming A Minecraft Movie setting new benchmarks in the genre.

As for the OutRun movie, fans might speculate that Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney are envisioning a high-octane, action-packed film akin to the Fast & Furious franchise, blending thrilling driving sequences with explosive action.
