"Oblivion Remastered's 'Spookmane' Ghost Hunt: Community Seeks Origins"

by Gabriel May 21,2025

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is brimming with eerie elements like skeletons, spirits, and zombies, yet a mysterious 'ghost horse' has surfaced, unseen in both the original 2006 game and the 2025 remaster. The discovery was first shared on Reddit by user TaricIsNotASupport, who stumbled upon what appears to be a spectral horse waiting to be uncovered.

"Uhhhh, guys, is this new?" TaricIsNotASupport posted, sparking curiosity within the Oblivion community. "So I was crafting stupid spells in Frostcrag Spire, as it's possibly my favorite way to have fun in this game, but when I left the Cosy Chaos Spire that has divided this community so much, I noticed something suuuuuuper strange in the distance," they recounted.

Driven by curiosity, TaricIsNotASupport dashed over to investigate and was astonished to find a spectral horse with no name. "I have played thousands of hours of the original Oblivion — and have already sunk over a hundred hours into the Remaster — yet this is the first I have ever seen this horse. I don't know if it's something new that's been added, or if I've just missed out on it before and never knew," they shared.

The community rallied around TaricIsNotASupport's discovery, initiating a digital ghost hunt. Players scoured the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages website but found no mention of a spectral mount in the original game. TaricIsNotASupport confirmed they could ride and interact with the ghostly horse, despite playing on a PlayStation 5 where mods are not available. They shared a clip of their character riding the horse, noting, "He fast travels and even gets stabled! By all accounts, it's now my steed!"

Speculation abounds that this ghost horse might be the result of a glitch, perhaps triggered by a misfired spell. Bethesda games are notorious for their bugs, and this could be another intriguing addition. ClaymoreBeatz commented, "Very weird, the wiki says there's only 2 unique horses, Shadowmere and unicorns. And there's no horse mods that I can see that do this, so I highly doubt you're lying about not being on PC; this is probably some sort of glitch that the new Remastered has or glitched magical effect."

Some players entertain the notion that Bethesda and Virtuos, the developers behind the remaster, might have included the ghost horse as a hidden Easter egg. While less likely, the idea has fueled excitement about potential undiscovered secrets in Oblivion Remastered.

Players are eager to replicate the phenomenon and claim a ghost horse of their own, although no specific method has been identified yet. TaricIsNotASupport has affectionately named their spectral steed 'Spookmane' and plans to continue their adventures with it. "This creature might be my favorite new friend I've made," they said. "Spookmane, you're glorious and I love you."

Oblivion Remastered, crafted by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, boasts numerous enhancements, including 4K resolution and 60 frames per second gameplay, alongside revamped leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. New dialogue, a refined third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology have been well-received, with some fans suggesting the remaster borders on a remake. Bethesda has clarified their decision to opt for a remaster rather than a full remake.

As players delve deeper into the remastered world, they're advised to tackle Kvatch early to avoid level scaling challenges. There are also reports of adventurers exploring beyond Cyrodiil into regions like Valenwood, Skyrim, and Hammerfell, the speculated setting for The Elder Scrolls VI.
