Fans Hail Bethesda's Oblivion Remaster Pricing, Urge Nintendo Follow
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has unexpectedly become central to the heated discussion about Nintendo's pricing strategy for the Switch 2. Fans are arguing the legendary company behind Mario could take some pricing lessons from Bethesda's approach.
Crafted by remake specialists Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, Oblivion Remastered delivers substantial visual and gameplay upgrades. Beyond the expected 4K/60fps performance, it completely overhauls leveling mechanics, character creation, combat animations, and UI systems. The package also introduces fresh dialogue, a refined third-person camera, and advanced lip-syncing technology. These extensive improvements have led many players to argue this is essentially a remake - though Bethesda maintains it's technically a remaster.
Priced at $50 with all original DLC included, the package stands in stark contrast to Nintendo's Switch 2 pricing. This contrast becomes even sharper when comparing to Nintendo's offerings.
The debate intensifies when contrasting Oblivion's package with Nintendo's $70 Breath of the Wild - Switch 2 Edition or the shocking $80 price tag for Tears of the Kingdom - Switch 2. While Nintendo offers a $10 upgrade path for existing owners, the standalone pricing - especially the $80 tier for multiple Switch 2 titles - has drawn significant backlash.
The situation worsens for Zelda fans when considering Breath of the Wild's Switch 2 Edition excludes the Expansion Pass. This means an additional $20 purchase for the DLC content, bringing the total cost to $90 for the complete experience (if buying new).
Nintendo's Switch 2 version does offer visual enhancements, achievements, and integration with the new "Zelda Notes" service - but these require purchasing the new edition outright. The $90 total price for a 2017 Wii U game's ultimate version feels particularly jarring when compared to Nintendo's $80 Mario Kart World and the $450 Switch 2 console itself.
Meanwhile, Oblivion Remastered offers what many consider a near-complete remake experience at $50 with all expansions included. This stark value comparison has many questioning Nintendo's pricing logic.

The gaming community isn't holding back their opinions. "Nintendo will look at them and say 'those guys could have made $30 extra'," joked one Reddit user. Another commented: "It's hard for them to learn much of anything over the sound of all that money being printed."
Nitendo can learn from Bethesda
Industry analyst Dr. Serkan Toto summarized Nintendo's position bluntly: "They're charging this because they know people will pay." This sentiment encapsulates why Nintendo maintains its premium pricing despite growing criticism.
For those diving into Oblivion Remastered, comprehensive guides are available covering everything from interactive maps to character optimization. Meanwhile, the debate continues about what constitutes fair pricing in the remaster/remake space.
