Nintendo's Fukuoka Shop Draws Mixed Reviews (50 characters)

by Michael Sep 23,2025

Nintendo has revealed plans to launch a new flagship store in Fukuoka, Japan, scheduled to open in late 2025.

The upcoming Nintendo Fukuoka will mark the company's fourth official retail location in Japan, joining existing stores in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Notably, this will be Nintendo's first venture outside Japan's main island of Honshu, positioned instead in Fukuoka City on the southern island of Kyushu.

Japanese netizens on X (formerly Twitter) have shared mixed reactions to the announcement. While many celebrated the news, hoping this signals future expansion to other regions, several users speculated that Sapporo - Hokkaido's largest city - would be the ideal next location. The northern island currently lacks an official Nintendo store.

The Nagoya Dilemma

The announcement sparked notable disappointment among residents of Nagoya, Japan's fourth-largest city. Despite its central location and industrial significance, Nagoya frequently gets overlooked in favor of Tokyo and Osaka. This phenomenon, locally known as "Nagoya skipping," gained public attention through a revealing 2016 survey. When residents of Japan's eight largest cities ranked destinations by tourist appeal, Nagoya locals surprisingly placed their own city third - behind only Tokyo and Kyoto.

The trend persists in entertainment and retail development, with major events and store openings often bypassing the Aichi prefecture capital. Recent municipal efforts hope to counter this perception, including the July opening of a massive 17,000-capacity arena that city officials believe will boost Nagoya's appeal.

Strategic Location for Nintendo Fukuoka

The new Fukuoka store will occupy prime retail space within Hakata Station, Kyushu's busiest transportation hub with direct bullet train access to Honshu and convenient airport connections. This strategic placement will serve both local gaming fans from surrounding prefectures and international tourists.

Fukuoka has seen particularly strong post-pandemic tourism recovery, with South Korean visitors leading the surge. Regional government data indicates this growth trend will continue, making the location ideal for Nintendo's retail expansion.

Beyond selling Nintendo's full product range - from Switch consoles to exclusive merchandise - the Fukuoka location will likely serve as a promotional platform for the anticipated Switch successor. Like its sister stores, it will host game demonstrations and launch events.

This Asian expansion follows Nintendo's recent retail growth in the U.S., including last week's high-profile opening of Nintendo San Francisco - the company's first West Coast flagship store.
