Nintendo Projects Modest Switch 2 Sales Amid Tariff Concerns

by Ethan Sep 23,2025

Nintendo has announced a cautious sales forecast for the Switch 2, citing uncertainties surrounding U.S. tariffs.

In its financial report today, Nintendo projected 15 million Switch 2 units and 45 million game sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026. The console launches on June 5.

Nintendo noted that its forecast assumes current U.S. tariff rates, effective since April 10, will remain unchanged. However, the company acknowledged that any tariff adjustments could impact projections. “We will keep monitoring market conditions to adapt as needed,” Nintendo stated.

Daniel Ahmad, Director of Research & Insights at Niko Partners, described the 15 million unit target as “conservative” in a post on X, noting that Nintendo is likely accounting for tariff unpredictability, pricing challenges, and production constraints despite strong pre-order demand.

Ahmad added that Nintendo might revise its forecast upward if tariffs ease. “The challenge now is the ripple effects already impacting the console launch environment, alongside the risk of higher tariffs,” he said.

Notably, if the Switch 2 achieves 15 million sales in its first year, it would rank among the most successful console launches ever, surpassing the original Switch’s 14.87 million units sold in its debut year.

Demand for the Switch 2 appears robust. Despite a tariff-related delay, pre-orders opened on April 24, with the console priced at $449.99 — and they sold out quickly, as anticipated. Meanwhile, Nintendo has cautioned U.S. customers who pre-ordered through the My Nintendo Store, stating that high demand may prevent delivery by the release date.
