NieR: Automata offers a vast world to explore, filled with main story missions and numerous side quests. Many players find content seemingly missable on their first playthrough. However, the true extent of the game unlocks only after completing a specific set of playthroughs. This guide explains how to unlock and utilize Chapter Select to revisit earlier game sections and complete all available content.

Unlocking Chapter Select

To access Chapter Select, you must reach one of the game's true endings. This requires completing three playthroughs, making specific choices during the final confrontation of the third playthrough. While referred to as playthroughs, many consider them chapters due to their individual story arcs.

After completing a playthrough and viewing the credits, save your game. Loading that save file will initiate the next section, often with a new playable character. The final playthrough involves switching between characters; its completion unlocks Chapter Select for that save file.

How Chapter Select Works

Access Chapter Select from two convenient locations:

• Main Menu: When loading a save file, the Chapter Select option will be available on the main menu.
• Access Points: Chapter Select can also be accessed from any in-game access point.

This menu allows you to select any chapter from the main story to load. All aspects of your profile, including weapons, level, and items, carry over. If a chapter features multiple playable characters, you can choose which character to play as when loading it.

Important Note: Completed side quests cannot be replayed, regardless of the selected chapter. Always save at an access point before changing chapters to prevent loss of progress, levels, and items acquired within the current chapter. Chapter Select is invaluable for revisiting sections, completing missed content, and exploring alternate choices to achieve all possible endings.
