"Marvel Rivals Season 1 Update: Mods Disabled"

The Season 1 update for *Marvel Rivals* has reportedly removed the ability to use custom-made mods, marking a significant shift in the game’s accessibility and customization. Since its launch, many players have enjoyed adding personalized character skins and visual tweaks through modding communities. However, with the arrival of Season 1 on January 10, 2025, it appears these modifications are no longer functional.
NetEase Games, the developer behind *Marvel Rivals*, has long maintained that mod usage violates the game's terms of service. Although this policy was already in place, the latest update seems to enforce it more strictly by implementing hash checking—a technical method used to verify file integrity and prevent unauthorized alterations. As a result, players logging into the updated version are finding their previously installed mods disabled, leaving characters stuck in their default appearances.
This change comes shortly after the game’s successful debut in early December 2024 and the introduction of new Season 1 content. Among the most anticipated additions are playable characters from The Fantastic Four, starting with Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman, while Thing and Human Torch are expected later in February. Alongside them, the season brings a fresh Battle Pass, new maps, and an all-new Doom Match game mode designed to enhance player engagement.
Why Did NetEase Remove Mod Support?
While some players were disappointed by the removal of mod support, others saw it coming. NetEase has consistently warned against the use of third-party modifications, even issuing bans to users caught using them. Notably, a Donald Trump-themed Captain America mod was banned earlier, signaling the company’s firm stance on unauthorized content.
Beyond enforcing policies, there may also be financial motivations behind this move. As a free-to-play title, *Marvel Rivals* relies heavily on in-game purchases to generate revenue. Official cosmetic bundles—featuring exclusive skins, sprays, and emotes—are among the primary monetization tools. By blocking access to free, user-created cosmetics, NetEase ensures continued demand for premium content, protecting its business model in the process.
Some players had expressed concerns over certain mods, including those depicting heroes without clothing, but such issues were likely secondary to the broader economic considerations. For now, the community is left adjusting to a more restricted experience, with many creators choosing to share unreleased mods on platforms like Twitter before they disappear forever.
