Marvel Rivals Devs Respond to Fan Feedback, Unveil Season 3 Overhaul
NetEase Games is revamping its Marvel Rivals post-launch strategy, shortening seasons and committing to monthly hero releases to sustain player engagement in its live service model.
This significant shift in the content release plan was highlighted in the Marvel Rivals Season 2 Dev Vision Vol. 5 video. The 15-minute video outlined Season 2’s launch on April 11, introducing Emma Frost as a new Vanguard, with Ultron’s class to be revealed closer to his mid-season debut. Both characters will bring fresh abilities to keep players engaged, but Season 3 marks the start of broader changes to hero integration in matches.
In Marvel Rivals Season 3, which has no confirmed release date yet, NetEase will reduce season durations from three months to two. This accelerates major content updates while upholding the promise of a new hero every half-season. After Emma Frost’s launch next week, players will wait roughly a month and a half for Ultron, but subsequent hero releases will arrive more quickly.
“Since Season 1 began, we’ve been focused on ensuring Marvel Rivals remains a thrilling and dynamic experience,” said Guangyun Chen, creative director of Marvel Rivals, in the Dev Vision video. “Recent social media discussions have pushed us to keep the game’s energy high, as it was at launch. We hear you and agree.”
Chen emphasized NetEase’s commitment to fulfilling players’ Marvel superhero fantasies by introducing new modes and expanding the character roster. After extensive internal reviews, the team will tweak systems to support this increased content pace. More details will be shared before Season 3 begins.
“Our aim is to maintain the excitement from our launch months, and Marvel Rivals’ true journey is just starting,” Chen added.
NetEase recently unveiled Marvel Rivals Season 2, announcing a shift from its vampire-themed storyline to the Hellfire Gala, bringing new costumes, maps, and characters. Further details will follow in the coming weeks.
Marvel Rivals took off in December, amassing 10 million players in three days. The free-to-play superhero PvP shooter, available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, hit 480,990 concurrent players on Steam at launch. Season 1 in January peaked at 644,269 concurrents, ranking it as Steam’s 15th most-played game ever.
Despite a decline in concurrent players since then, prompting NetEase’s roadmap overhaul, Marvel Rivals remains a top title on Steam. Season 2’s launch is expected to boost engagement, with Season 3 set to further energize the community.
