Game Director Joe Ziegler clarified that Marathon won't adopt a free-to-play structure during Bungie's April 13 gameplay showcase. While revealing new trailers and release dates, developers withheld specific pricing details, sparking speculation among fans.

"We believe our offering warrants player investment," Ziegler stated on the Friends Per Second podcast. "Our seasonal content will expand the experience without additional purchase requirements beyond the initial price."

Following mixed fan reactions online, Bungie confirmed via social media that Marathon will be priced below traditional AAA standards. The studio plans to announce complete pricing details this summer ahead of launch.

Proximity Chat Exclusion

The development team made the deliberate choice to omit proximity chat functionality despite its popularity in modern multiplayer titles. Ziegler explained this decision stems from concerns about maintaining a positive player environment.

"While we recognize the engagement potential of proximity chat," Ziegler told PC Gamer, "our priority remains ensuring a welcoming space for all players. Current solutions don't adequately address toxicity concerns."

This means players won't experience spontaneous negotiations or rival banter during matches - a common feature in extraction shooters. The team remains open to revisiting this feature should effective moderation solutions emerge.

Marathon launches September 23, 2025 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms.
