"The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Hunt Premieres December 2027"

by Zachary May 25,2025

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have exciting news for fans of Middle-earth, announcing the release date for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum set for December 17, 2027. This premiere date is over two years away, marking at least a one-year delay from the previously announced 2026 plan. However, this hasn't dampened the spirits of fantasy enthusiasts, who are already planning their Christmas celebrations for 2027 around this cinematic event.

The film is helmed by director Andy Serkis, renowned for his work on Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. Serkis is no stranger to the world of J.R.R. Tolkien, having captivated audiences with his portrayal of Gollum in both the original The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, as well as Caesar in the 2010 Planet of the Apes trilogy. Fans will be thrilled to know that Serkis will not only direct but also reprise his iconic role as Gollum.

Serkis's deep understanding of Gollum's character will be complemented by the involvement of other Middle-earth veterans. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Zane Weiner are set to produce the film, while Walsh, Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou will contribute to the screenplay. Last year, Jackson teased fans with insights into the story, promising to explore beloved characters' pasts and delve into aspects of Gollum's journey that were previously untold.

“We really want to explore [Gollum’s] backstory and delve into those parts of his journey we didn’t have time to cover in the earlier films,” Jackson remarked. “It’s too soon to know who will cross his path, but suffice to say we will take our lead from [original author J.R.R. Tolkien].”

As Warner Bros. continues to expand the cinematic universe of The Lord of the Rings, The Hunt for Gollum is poised to introduce other familiar faces. Gandalf, for instance, is one name expected to appear, with Boyens hinting at his potential involvement in up to two live-action films. If all goes well, the legendary wizard might once again be brought to life by the original actor, Ian McKellen.

With The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum slated for release in December 2027, fans have a wait ahead of them. In the meantime, they can stay engaged with the world of Middle-earth by keeping up with the latest developments on Amazon Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which has been confirmed to return for Season 3 earlier this year.
