James Gunn Details Superman's Role In DCU

by Daniel Dec 24,2025

The DC Cinematic Universe's new era, led by James Gunn, has officially begun with his upcoming Superman film. According to the filmmaker and studio head, this project is absolutely essential for establishing the overarching narrative of the "Gods and Monsters" phase.

"It's very important," Gunn emphasized in a June 19 interview with Entertainment Weekly. "While the animated series Creature Commandos plays a role, both Peacemaker and Superman are crucial for building the larger story."

He also stressed the importance of balancing essential plot details with accessibility. The goal is to provide core fans with meaningful connections without overwhelming casual viewers—because capturing their interest could turn them into dedicated followers.

"At the same time, I want to ensure that anyone can jump into the next story without feeling lost," Gunn explained. "The other projects add depth and context, but they're not mandatory viewing. That might change as the universe expands, similar to how Infinity War sets up Endgame."

He continued, "For now, you don't need to watch Superman to understand Supergirl. While Superman introduces elements that lead into Peacemaker, it's not required viewing. We'll include 'Previously in the DCU' recaps before each TV episode to keep everyone up to speed."

Gunn's Superman arrives in theaters on July 8, followed by Peacemaker Season 2 on Max starting August 21.
