It wouldn't be a Nintendo console without a Zelda, and the Nintendo Switch 2 is no exception, though it came in a form we weren't expecting. During today's Nintendo Direct, we learned that Koei Tecmo is developing a new Hyrule Warriors game: a Tears of the Kingdom prequel called Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. This exciting new addition to the franchise is set to launch this winter.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a fresh take on the Hyrule Warriors series, this time focusing on the cast of characters from the ancient history segments of Tears of the Kingdom. The game features familiar faces like Zelda, alongside Rauru, Sonia, and other wielders of the Secret Stones. It delves into Zelda's journey after she traveled back in time, where she teams up with the last Zonai, Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia, to battle Ganondorf and his forces.

The trailer showcased the unique abilities of these champions, including Mineru piloting her mech, Zelda wielding her magic, Rauru with his innovative sword-spear, and brief glimpses of the other Sacred Stone wielders in action.

This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which served as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Age of Calamity was particularly intriguing, as it offered a slightly unexpected take on the events leading up to Breath of the Wild. We awarded Age of Calamity a 9/10, praising it as "a joy to play and discover" and "a blast from start to finish."
