Jar of Sparks, the NetEase-backed studio founded by former Halo Infinite design head Jerry Hook, has paused development on its debut game project. The studio is actively seeking a new publishing partner to realize its vision for a "next-generation narrative-driven action game."

NetEase, a global gaming giant, currently supports live-service titles like Once Human and the recently launched Marvel Rivals. The latter's success, including the recent Season 1 Battle Pass announcement and upcoming Fantastic Four content, highlights NetEase's commitment to its existing portfolio.

Hook's LinkedIn post confirmed the development pause and the studio's search for a new partner capable of supporting their creative goals. While he expressed pride in the team's progress and innovative approach, he also indicated that team members will be exploring new opportunities. A subsequent post clarified that the studio will assist its team in finding new roles as the first project concludes.

This isn't NetEase's first collaboration with a high-profile developer; former Resident Evil producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi established GPTRACK50 Studios under NetEase in 2022.

The news comes amidst ongoing challenges for the Halo franchise, including mixed reception to Halo Infinite's post-launch content and the Halo TV series. However, 343 Industries' rebranding to Halo Studios and the shift to Unreal Engine suggest a potential revitalization for the franchise.

While Jar of Sparks' future remains uncertain, the studio's ambition and the industry experience of its leadership suggest a promising, albeit temporarily delayed, future for its ambitious project.
