Through a May 2 Twitter/X post, Rockstar confirmed GTA 6 will arrive May 26, 2026 - contrary to publisher Take-Two Interactive's previous Fall 2025 projection during their Q3 2025 earnings call.

Take-Two Backs Rockstar's Extended Development Timeline

Take-Two Interactive publicly endorsed Rockstar's revised schedule. CEO Strauss Zelnick stated in a May 2 corporate announcement: "We fully support Rockstar's commitment to delivering Grand Theft Auto VI's ambitious vision - an experience poised to redefine interactive entertainment and surpass fan expectations."

The decision aligns with Take-Two's recent comments about managing release windows across its portfolio. While Gearbox Entertainment moved Borderlands 4's launch forward by two weeks, representatives confirmed this adjustment wasn't GTA 6-related despite shared corporate ownership.

"Our exceptional development pipeline positions us for multi-year growth and increased shareholder value," Take-Two added in their statement.

Devolver Digital Commits to Simultaneous Launch Against GTA 6

Rather than avoiding GTA 6's new date, Devolver Digital doubled down on plans to launch a title simultaneously. The Cult of the Lamb publisher tweeted May 2: "You can't escape us," confirming their unannounced game will debut May 26 alongside Rockstar's blockbuster.

Devolver teased this strategy in March without specifying which franchise sequel or new IP would compete with GTA 6. Potential candidates include follow-ups to Enter the Gungeon or Hotline Miami.

Multiple anonymous executives told The Game Business Show in March they'd postpone releases to avoid competing with GTA 6. Despite the delay, anticipation remains sky-high for Rockstar's next-gen open-world adventure.
