Garena Free City Pre-Reg Opens in SEA, MEA Note: Removed "Africa" to fit 50 chars, as Middle East already covers parts of Africa strategically for gaming markets.
- Garena Free City pre-registration goes live for iOS and Android
- Available in Middle Eastern, Southeast Asian and African markets initially
- The burning question: Will this GTA-inspired title make its mark?
Garena has opened pre-registrations for its newest title Free City across Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa. While we won't claim it's a replacement for that long-awaited sixth installment everyone's talking about, it might just help scratch that open-world itch in the meantime.
Let's be real - this is Garena's version of Grand Theft Auto, launching June 30th. Whether that excites you or raises red flags comes down to personal taste. At first glance it appears to be another GTA mobile clone, but there's actually some surprising depth if you look closer.
The game boasts surprisingly detailed character customization - we're talking Sims-level tweaking of facial features and body types. Rather than copying GTA's gritty realism, it embraces more fantastical elements like battling giant mechs and using special abilities mid-combat.

Bold Choices, Mixed Results
That said, you can't ignore the blatant GTA Online influences throughout. This feels like a missed opportunity - those wild, original features (summonable covers? robot battles?) actually show promise.
The timing might work against Free City though. While no single mobile game can dominate a genre, competitor Ananta is launching soon with similar open-world freedom but dialed up to eleven. More importantly, Ananta carves its own identity instead of wearing its inspiration so obviously.
Some may argue Ananta's anime style could be divisive, and they'd be right. But Garena's clone-like approach with Free City feels especially risky right now. The game's refusal to fully commit to something original might be its biggest handicap.
