Final Fantasy Tactics Creator Fights Division and Inequality

Final Fantasy Tactics creator and director Yasumi Matsuno has shared the inspiration behind the game, explaining that he wrote its story to bring joy to people living in an era that "had been stripped of hope."

Now, with the long-rumored Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles finally receiving a release date later this year, Matsuno posted a heartfelt message on X/Twitter, stating that he "offers this story once again"—as if speaking to the deep uncertainty and division that also trouble us in 2025.

"Almost three decades ago, the collapse of Japan’s bubble economy buried financial institutions under mountains of bad debt, setting off a wave of corporate bankruptcies, a sharp spike in unemployment, and an overall stagnation of Japanese society," he recalled. "It was a time when hope was taken from many, and dreams were measured by their cost."

"It was against this backdrop that I created a story," he continued. "It was the story of Ramza, a young man who fought relentlessly against a rigid class system. It was the story of Delita, who sought to exploit the chaos and despair for his own social advancement. It was a tale of intertwined friendship and betrayal—a tale of a unique destiny.

"And now, in 2025—a time when inequality and division still run deep in our society—I offer this story once more. The power to resist lies in your hands."

The Final Fantasy Tactics remaster includes two versions of the game: the classic original (featuring the War of the Lions translation) and a brand-new edition with full voice acting, a redesigned interface, "extensive story additions and adjustments," and polished visuals. It arrives on PS5 and PS5 on September 30, 2025.
