Key Reveals from the Donkey Kong Bananza Direct
Welcome To The Underground

On June 18, 2025, Nintendo presented an 18-minute Donkey Kong Bananza Direct, unveiling more about what players can expect. This includes a vast new world to discover and innovative gameplay mechanics usable almost anywhere.
While glimpses of gameplay debuted during a prior Nintendo Treehouse Live session—a showcase where developers share hands-on demos—this Bananza Direct provided a much deeper look at the announced features.

The story follows Donkey Kong, swept into a subterranean realm by a fierce storm that separates him from the Golden Bananas of Ingot Isle. He soon discovers he's not alone, teaming up with a peculiar sentient rock named Odd Rock. This rock is actually Pauline, a young human girl determined to return to the surface and achieve her dream.
Legends say any wish can be granted at the planet's core, sending DK and Pauline on an epic adventure. Their journey won't be simple, as the villainous Void Company also seeks the core to fulfill its own dark ambitions, setting out to stop the duo at every turn.
Smash, Throw, Jump, and Interact

Donkey Kong Bananza promises a highly interactive world ripe for exploration. DK can run, jump, climb cliffs, and manipulate his surroundings—smashing, throwing, or building objects to forge his own path. Secret items and treasures are hidden throughout, often revealed through a bit of creative destruction.
Hard materials like rocks can be hurled at enemies, while softer substances like sand and soil can be shaped into bridges or towers.
Co-Op Multiplayer With Pauline

The game reinvents multiplayer by elevating Pauline from a sidekick to a fully playable character for Player 2. Using Joy-Con pointer controls, Player 2 can command Pauline, using her powerful voice to blast foes—mirroring DK's brawny attacks. She can also replicate materials from the environment to amplify her vocal abilities.
This co-op mode supports the Switch 2's GameShare function, allowing play with someone on another Switch 1 or Switch 2 console, even if they don't own the game. Online multiplayer via GameChat is also an option.
Music Drives the Adventure: DK Transformations

Pauline's magical singing voice can trigger temporary transformations for DK, turning him into various "Bananza" forms like a larger version of himself, a zebra, or even a flying ostrich. Collecting gold refills his "Bananergy" meter to power these changes.
Transform on the fly, enabling seamless transitions from soaring through the air to pounding the ground. Pauline's melodies can also guide players during quests.
Outfit Customization, Photo Mode, and DK Artist Mode

For players seeking extra creativity, the game includes several engaging features. First, you can purchase custom outfits for both DK and Pauline to add style to their underground journey.
Then, use the built-in Photo Mode to capture perfect moments, adjusting angles, applying filters, and making personalized edits.
Beyond the main adventure, DK Artist Mode offers a creative outlet. This stone-carving mode lets players sculpt, paint, and add materials to craft unique masterpieces.
These are just some highlights from the Direct. This quirky action-adventure platformer and demolition game likely has even more surprises in store for launch.
