Destiny 2 Username Overhaul: Bungie's Unexpected Name Change

Free Name Change Tokens on the Way

Following a recent update, many Destiny 2 players discovered their Bungie Names had been unexpectedly replaced, often with "Guardian" followed by a random number sequence. This widespread issue, starting around August 14th, stemmed from a malfunction in Bungie's name moderation system.

Bungie acknowledged the problem on Twitter (X), stating, "We're investigating a problem affecting many accounts where our name moderation tool has changed usernames. We'll share more details, including information about additional name change tokens for everyone, tomorrow."

Bungie's system typically alters usernames violating its terms of service (offensive language, personal information, etc.). However, numerous players reported having their names changed despite adhering to these guidelines, some having used the same name since 2015.

Bungie swiftly investigated, confirming the high number of affected players via several tweets. They subsequently announced the identification and resolution of the underlying server-side issue, preventing further accidental name changes.

Their Twitter (X) update read: "The problem causing widespread Bungie name changes has been identified and fixed on the server. We still plan to provide all players with name change tokens later."

While the immediate issue is resolved, Bungie urges players to remain patient. Affected players can expect free name change tokens and further communication from the developers shortly.
