Nintendo Prepares Retailers for Switch 2 Launch with 'Out of Stock' Signs

by Finn Jul 31,2025

Nintendo has started distributing Switch 2 branded 'Out of Stock' signs to retailers ahead of the console's official release.

The Switch 2 is slated to launch in just two days, on Thursday, June 5, with Nintendo anticipating demand will exceed available stock.

As shared on Reddit (credit to VGC), official Switch 2 'Out of Stock' signs have begun appearing in U.S. stores, alongside promotional materials for the console and its launch title, Mario Kart World. "Received these signs from Nintendo," posted a Reddit user employed at a store hosting a midnight launch event. "They’re poking fun."

Nintendo has already cautioned about limited Switch 2 availability, particularly in Japan, where demand is expected to far outstrip supply. In the U.S., Nintendo has shifted production to Vietnam to mitigate uncertainties surrounding tariffs on Chinese-made goods.

Stock shortages are common for new console launches, and Switch 2 buyers have already faced challenges securing pre-orders, making sell-outs almost certain.

These 'Out of Stock' signs will help retail staff manage the flood of inquiries about Switch 2 availability.

"Every retail worker knows they’ll face a dozen customers a week, maybe more, ignoring the sign and demanding consoles from 'the back' like it’s a magical stockroom," one user commented.

Announcing an item is out of stock also serves as a marketing tactic, signaling high demand and desirability to consumers.

"This kind of advertising makes people want it more," a fan noted. "It creates a sense of urgency and makes you feel you need to act fast."

In preparation for the Switch 2 launch, Nintendo has updated the original Switch and Animal Crossing: New Horizons to align with the new hardware. Last night, enhanced versions of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet running on Switch 2 were also showcased.

For those securing a Switch 2 this week, Nintendo has shared critical guidance on preserving the console’s screen by keeping its protective plastic film intact.
