AI Boom's High RAM Prices Could Cripple Gaming for Years

by Nathan May 09,2026

Rising memory costs are becoming a major worry for high-end gaming, with industry experts warning this may not be a short-term blip but a lasting trend.

The booming demand from generative AI is straining global supplies of memory and storage. Data centers are absorbing vast quantities, driving up prices for components like DRAM and SSDs. Many analysts believe the era of cheap, plentiful RAM and storage is over, as AI-driven demand continues to outpace manufacturing output.

These market pressures are already having a real-world impact. Major system integrator CyberPowerPC announced price increases for memory upgrades in the U.S. and UK, citing challenging market conditions.

"Global RAM prices have recently skyrocketed by approximately 500%, with SSD costs also doubling," a CyberPowerPC statement noted. "This has directly increased the cost of building gaming PCs since October 1st, 2025." The new pricing is set to take effect on December 7th.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney highlighted the potential severity of the situation on social media. "Soaring RAM prices will pose a real challenge for high-end gaming for the next several years," he stated. "Manufacturers are prioritizing cutting-edge DRAM production for the AI sector, where data centers are willing to pay a significant premium over consumer electronics companies."

The volatility has grown so extreme that some retailers, as reported by PCWorld, have begun selling RAM at daily fluctuating 'market' prices. CyberPowerPC also pointed out the unfortunate timing, with these increases landing just before the crucial holiday shopping season.

The problem is expected to persist. "The massive build-out of AI infrastructure is consuming a huge portion of the available semiconductor supply," said Dan Nystedt, Vice President of Research at TriOrient, in an interview with CNBC. "We anticipate 2026 demand will far exceed even the levels we're seeing this year."

As CNBC explains, AI servers predominantly use processors from companies like Nvidia, which rely heavily on specialized High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM). Nystedt noted that AI server firms are aggressively bidding for these premium chips. "This could be very problematic for PCs, laptops, consumer electronics, and the automotive industry, all of which depend on affordable memory," he added.

Concerns are also mounting for video game console pricing. Online speculation suggests Microsoft might be forced to increase Xbox console prices again in response to memory shortages. Valve has not yet announced pricing for its rumored next-generation Steam Machine, and unstable memory costs could be a contributing factor.
