Breaking: Pokemon GO Ends Device Support

Pokemon GO to Drop Support for Older Android Devices in 2025

A pair of upcoming updates will render Pokemon GO unplayable on several older mobile devices, starting as early as March 2025. The updates will specifically end support for 32-bit Android devices. Players using affected devices are urged to safeguard their login credentials and upgrade their phones to maintain continuous gameplay.

Pokemon GO, the popular augmented reality game celebrating its ninth anniversary this summer, boasts a significant player base. While peak player numbers have fluctuated since its 2016 launch, recent data indicates a substantial active player count. However, this upcoming change will impact a segment of this player base.

Niantic, the game developer, announced on January 9th that several older Android models will lose compatibility. The first update, in March 2025, will affect some Android devices downloaded from the Samsung Galaxy store. A subsequent update in June will specifically target 32-bit Android devices obtained via Google Play.

While a complete list of affected devices hasn't been provided, the following models are confirmed to be incompatible:

  • Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J3
  • Sony Xperia Z2, Z3
  • Motorola Moto G (1st generation)
  • LG Fortune, Tribute
  • OnePlus One
  • HTC One (M8)
  • ZTE Overture 3
  • Various Android devices released before 2015

Players affected by these changes are advised to save their login details. While they can regain access after upgrading to a compatible device, they will be unable to access their accounts, including any purchased Pokecoins, until the upgrade is complete.

Despite this disruption, 2025 promises exciting developments for the broader Pokemon franchise. Highly anticipated releases like Pokemon Legends: Z-A are on the horizon, alongside rumored projects such as Pokemon Black and White remakes and a potential new entry in the Let's Go series. Further details regarding Pokemon GO's future are expected, potentially at a rumored Pokemon Presents event on February 27th.
