Gearbox CEO Sees eBay's Borderlands 4 Fortnite Skin as Investment

Borderlands 4 boss Randy Pitchford has hinted that the game’s pre-order bundle, which includes a free Fortnite skin, might prove to be a savvy investment—citing a previous Borderlands skin that reportedly sold for "over $2,000 in eBay trades."

In a social media post, Pitchford promoted the looter shooter’s Epic Games Store pre-order deal, which grants access to the Mad Moxxi outfit in Fortnite. However, players were quick to note that account or item trading violates Fortnite’s Terms of Service and could lead to a ban.

"Is it true the pre-order Psycho Bandit skin became one of Fortnite’s most valuable cosmetics, sometimes selling for over $2,000 on eBay?" Pitchford asked. "What are the chances this bundle ends up being worth far more than the game it’s promoting?"

First, let’s clarify what Pitchford is referencing. The Psycho Bandit skin he mentioned debuted in 2019 as part of a similar Epic Games Store promotion for Borderlands 3. It was also briefly offered in Fortnite’s item shop before being removed from sale for an extended period.

During that hiatus, the skin became a highly sought-after collectible among Fortnite fans. However, its perceived rarity and value dropped sharply when it returned to the item shop in April 2025, making it widely available again after five years.

Skins considered rare or unlikely to be re-released often drive player demand, though Fortnite itself provides no official way to sell or trade in-game items. Instead, some players buy or sell accounts containing rare cosmetics—a practice Epic Games explicitly prohibits under its Terms of Service, warning that it can result in long-term or permanent account bans.

All this is worth considering before treating a Borderlands 4 pre-order solely as a potential money-making venture centered on a Fortnite skin. Still, at least the game isn’t priced at $80.

Borderlands 4 launches this Friday, September 12, for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. A Nintendo Switch 2 version will follow on October 3.
