Larian Studios' former writer, Baudelaire Welch, recently revealed at a UK conference how Baldur's Gate 3's (BG3) infamous bear romance scene became a landmark moment in gaming.

Welch, the game's companion narrative lead, hailed the scene as a "watershed moment," praising Larian Studios for uniquely responding to the desires of the game's fanfiction community. This unprecedented move, he asserted, acknowledged and validated a significant player base.

The romance option with Halsin, a druid who transforms into a bear, wasn't initially planned. However, the game's fanfiction, expressing a strong desire for a "daddy Halsin" romance, influenced the storyline. Welch confirmed to Eurogamer that Halsin wasn't originally intended as a romantic interest. The bear transformation, initially conceived for combat, unexpectedly became a pivotal element in his character arc, reflecting his emotional struggles.

Welch highlighted the enduring power of fanfiction in maintaining a game's community, particularly romance storylines. He emphasized the prolonged engagement such content fosters, keeping the game relevant even after completion. This community, he noted, is particularly vital to female and LGBTQIA+ players, who significantly contributed to BG3's ongoing popularity.
