My First Adult LEGO Purchase Was This Mario Set and I Have No Regrets

by Emma Mar 15,2025

I'm generally practical with my spending. Essentials get priority, maybe a discounted video game occasionally, but that's usually it. It wasn't until last year that I even considered a LEGO set—a seemingly frivolous purchase. Despite childhood LEGO love, I'd grown out of it. Part of that was the price; while some sets are affordable, movie or game tie-ins often inflate the cost. This explains my hesitation with the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant. It's been on sale for under $50 since last October, but only recently did I decide my desk needed a new, slightly unsettling, plant.

540 pieces, poseable. $59.99 (20% off) $47.95 at Amazon; $59.99 (20% off) $47.99 at Walmart

I initially considered this set after seeing IGN's build. A lifelong Mario fan, it seemed the perfect way to showcase my love for the franchise. LEGO's botanical line offers lovely flower sets, but none are as delightfully terrifying as this little guy.

Having built it, I'm thrilled. It sparks Mushroom Kingdom daydreams. The building process was enjoyable too; challenging enough to keep me engaged during an afternoon. It's my only Nintendo LEGO set, but this experience makes me want more.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

LEGO's adult-targeted sets often exceed $200, tempting overspending. Balancing indulgence with financial responsibility is key. This Mario set, under $50, felt justifiable. The hours spent building and the daily joy it brings make it worthwhile. Is that happiness worth over $50? For me, yes.
