Epic Announces Fortnite Lego PVE, Eight Years Later
Before Fortnite rose to fame as a battle royale game, it originally debuted as a PVE experience called Save the World. In that mode, teams united to fight off hordes of zombies.
Now, Fortnite is revisiting its origins with Lego Fortnite Expeditions, a new mission-driven PVE mode for up to four players. It appears to blend the game’s existing Lego sandbox with the cooperative action of PlayStation’s hit title Helldivers.
In Expeditions, players set out from the Academy hub to choose from various combat assignments across three distinct locations. Finishing missions contributes to global Team Projects that grant upgrades for everyone and unlock new mission types. You can also relax at the Academy and accept Assignments from other Fortnite characters.
Expeditions introduces three explorable maps and three hero classes that can be upgraded. The Shadow Caller can fly and unleash ranged explosive attacks, or turn into Shadow Form to evade danger. The Hunter uses Bull’s-eye Blade, which marks targets to amplify damage and boosts accuracy for the entire squad. Meanwhile, the Rift Ripper warps across the battlefield, fires rift crystals, and provides buffs to other heroes.
Epic Games intends Expeditions to become a permanent fixture in Fortnite, joining the roster as the third major Lego addition—following the survival-focused Lego Odyssey and the simulation-style Lego Brick Life. While those modes have remained relatively isolated, Expeditions will incorporate the main antagonist and narrative theme from Fortnite’s ongoing Battle Royale storyline.
At launch, Expeditions pits players against Mask Maker Daigo and his forces while allowing them to team up with heroes from the Battle Royale cast—including fan favorites like Jonesy and Hope. The mode’s trailer also displays the "Super" logo from the current Battle Royale season, along with its high-profile crossover hero, Superman. This hints that Expeditions could evolve to align with upcoming Battle Royale seasonal events.
Fortnite’s latest season revolves around a superhero theme, launching soon after the explosive finale of its Star Wars Death Star crossover. This week is packed with updates, including Blitz Royale—a fast-paced, 32-player battle royale mode designed for quick sessions on mobile. Both Blitz Royale and Lego Fortnite Expeditions go live tomorrow, June 18.
