Respawn Cancels Multiplayer FPS Project Quietly

by Joseph May 03,2025

Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has canceled an unannounced incubation project, resulting in the layoff of an undisclosed number of employees involved in the project. The news was initially reported by Insider Gaming, referencing a now-deleted LinkedIn post from a former production coordinator who mentioned the project's cancellation and their subsequent job search.

IGN independently verified the cancellation of this multiplayer FPS project, which was being developed by a team previously working on a now-canceled Star Wars FPS at Respawn. Although the exact number of layoffs remains undisclosed, a source familiar with the project described it as "small." Additionally, at least one individual connected to the project has stated on LinkedIn that their exit was voluntary.

This development is part of a broader pattern of project cancellations, layoffs, and restructuring within Electronic Arts (EA). The trend began in 2023 with the elimination of 50 jobs at BioWare and an unspecified number at Codemasters. Nearly a year ago, EA laid off 670 employees across the company and terminated several projects, including the Star Wars FPS, which led to approximately two dozen job losses at Respawn. Since then, BioWare has undergone restructuring, with developers reassigned to other projects and additional layoffs of key personnel.

IGN has sought a response from Electronic Arts regarding these developments.
