Sony Reboots Starship Troopers After Helldivers Movie Announcement

by Max May 06,2025

Sony is set to reboot the iconic "Starship Troopers" franchise with a new film adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 military sci-fi novel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, acclaimed director Neill Blomkamp, known for films like "District 9," "Elysium," and "Chappie," will helm this project. Both Deadline and Variety have confirmed these reports.

This upcoming movie is a fresh take on Heinlein's original work and is not connected to Paul Verhoeven's 1997 cult classic, which famously satirized the novel. The new "Starship Troopers" film is being developed by Sony's Columbia Pictures and aims to return to the source material, which differs significantly in tone from Verhoeven's film.

The announcement of Blomkamp's involvement comes at an interesting time, as Sony recently revealed plans for a live-action adaptation of the popular PlayStation game "Helldivers." This game, developed by Arrowhead, draws heavy inspiration from Verhoeven's "Starship Troopers," featuring soldiers fighting for a satirical fascist regime called Super Earth against alien bugs and other enemies, all while promoting the ideals of Liberty and Managed Democracy.

With both "Starship Troopers" and "Helldivers" in development, Sony faces the challenge of distinguishing these projects from one another, despite their thematic similarities. The Hollywood Reporter emphasizes that Blomkamp's vision for "Starship Troopers" will not be a remake of Verhoeven's movie but a faithful adaptation of Heinlein's book, which some interpret as promoting the very ideals that Verhoeven's film satirized.

Currently, neither the new "Starship Troopers" nor the "Helldivers" movie has a set release date, indicating that fans may have to wait a while before seeing either project come to fruition. Blomkamp's most recent work was with Sony on the film "Gran Turismo," an adaptation of the popular PlayStation driving simulation series.
