Project Century and Virtua Fighter Project Shows Sega's Willingness to Take Risks

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) is tackling multiple large-scale projects simultaneously, a feat attributed to Sega's willingness to embrace risk and innovation. This bold strategy has led to the announcement of two exciting new titles, adding to their already impressive lineup. Let's delve into the details.

Sega's Embrace of Risk and New IPs

RGG Studio, renowned for the Like a Dragon series, is developing a brand-new IP alongside a Virtua Fighter project. These additions, alongside the upcoming Like a Dragon title and Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O remaster, showcase the studio's ambition and Sega's unwavering support. The publisher's trust and commitment to exploring uncharted territory are key factors in RGG's success.

In December, RGG unveiled trailers for both projects: Project Century, a new IP set in 1915 Japan, and a new Virtua Fighter project (distinct from the upcoming remaster). The scale and ambition evident in these trailers reflect Sega's confidence in RGG's capabilities.

"Sega accepts the possibility of failure; it doesn't shy away from risky projects," explains RGG Studio head and director Masayoshi Yokoyama in an interview with Famitsu, as translated by Automaton Media. He suggests this risk-taking is ingrained in Sega's DNA, citing the creation of Shenmue as an example of their willingness to experiment—a bold move born from the question, "What if we made 'VF' into an RPG?"

RGG Studio assures fans that the simultaneous development of these projects won't compromise quality, especially for the Virtua Fighter series. Original creator Yu Suzuki has expressed his support, and the team, including producer Riichiro Yamada, is committed to delivering an innovative and engaging experience.

Yamada emphasizes the team's goal: "With the new 'VF,' we aim to create something innovative and exciting for everyone! We hope both series veterans and newcomers alike will eagerly await further updates." Yokoyama echoes this sentiment, expressing his anticipation for fans to experience both upcoming titles.
