"Leaked Trailer Reveals Canceled Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Series"

by Ryan May 02,2025

Back in 2023, The CW's attempt to bring the beloved animated series, The Powerpuff Girls, into a live-action format was abruptly canceled after facing numerous challenges. Recently, a teaser video has emerged online, offering a glimpse into what this ambitious project could have been, and it's certainly sparking conversation.

This intriguing trailer, which surfaced on the YouTube channel "Lost Media Busters," was quickly taken down due to a copyright claim by Warner Bros. Entertainment. Clocking in at three-and-a-half minutes, the trailer delves into the lives of the now-adult Powerpuff Girls: Blossom (portrayed by Chloe Bennet), Bubbles (Dove Cameron), and Buttercup (Yana Perrault). The footage reveals a darker, more mature take on the characters, with Blossom battling burnout, Bubbles struggling with alcohol, and Buttercup challenging gender norms and embracing rebellion.

The narrative takes a dramatic turn as the trio accidentally causes the death of a character named Mojo and subsequently flees Townsville. Years later, they return to their hometown to visit their father, Professor Utonium (played by Donald Faison). They are confronted by Mojo's adult son, Jojo, who has risen to the position of mayor and is bent on revenge against the city and the Powerpuff Girls. The trailer is laced with edgy humor, featuring lines that push the boundaries, such as Bubbles' reference to juggalos and Buttercup's provocative remark about Jojo's vendetta against Blossom.

While the footage has captured the attention of fans and critics alike, The CW has clarified to Variety that the trailer was not an official release nor intended for public viewing.

The live-action Powerpuff Girls series was initially announced in 2020 but met its end in 2023 after several setbacks, including an unsuccessful pilot and the departure of Chloe Bennet from the cast. Reflecting on the project, CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz noted, “The reason you do pilots is because sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss. We believe in the cast completely. We believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers. We believe in the auspices of Greg Berlanti and Warner studios. In this case, the pilot didn’t work. But because we see there’s enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot. So that’s why we didn’t want to go forward with what we had. Tonally, it might’ve felt a little too campy. It didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might’ve felt. But again, you learn things when you test things out. And so in this case, we felt, let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board.”

This unexpected peek into the scrapped project has reignited discussions about the challenges of adapting cherished animated series into live-action formats and the fine line between honoring the original while exploring new, mature themes.
