GTA 6 Map Mod in GTA 5 Taken Down by Take-Two, Creator Says It Was 'Too Accurate'
The modder known as 'Dark Space,' who had created a playable version of the Grand Theft Auto 6 map within Grand Theft Auto 5, has officially ceased all work on the project following a copyright takedown notice from Take-Two, the parent company of Rockstar Games. The mod, which was free to download and based on leaked coordinate data and official trailer shots of GTA 6, gained significant attention in January as eager fans sought to explore a fan-made rendition of the anticipated game ahead of its official release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S this fall.
Dark Space's project came to an abrupt halt last week when he received a copyright strike notification from YouTube, prompted by a removal request from Take-Two. Facing the potential termination of his channel after multiple strikes, Dark Space preemptively removed all download links to his mod and addressed the situation in a response video on YouTube. He speculated that the accuracy of his map to the upcoming GTA 6 could be the reason behind Take-Two's actions.
In a subsequent interview with IGN, Dark Space expressed a resigned understanding of the situation, noting that he had anticipated such a response based on Take-Two's history of takedowns. He suggested that his mod might have jeopardized the surprise element of GTA 6's map for players, acknowledging the years of effort Rockstar had put into developing the game's world.
As a result, Dark Space has completely abandoned the project, stating, "Well they clearly do not want this project to exist... There’s no point putting more time into something that goes directly against what they’re willing to allow." He plans to continue creating content that he hopes his audience will enjoy but will steer clear of further GTA 5 mods related to GTA 6, citing the risks involved.
Concerns have also arisen within the GTA community about the potential targeting of the GTA 6 community mapping project by Take-Two, as IGN has reached out for comment on the matter.
Take-Two's actions align with their past behavior of shutting down fan projects that could potentially impact their business interests. This includes the recent takedown of the 'GTA Vice City Nextgen Edition' YouTube channel, which had ported elements from 2002's Vice City into 2008's GTA 4. A former Rockstar developer, Obbe Vermeij, defended these moves on social media, emphasizing that companies like Take-Two and Rockstar are obligated to protect their commercial interests.
As the gaming community awaits the release of GTA 6, IGN continues to provide comprehensive coverage, including insights from former Rockstar developers on potential delays, statements from Take-Two's leadership about the future of GTA Online, and expert analysis on the performance capabilities of the upcoming PS5 Pro for GTA 6.
