"Elden Ring Director: Duos Overlooked, Focus on 3 Players"

by Oliver May 28,2025

Elden Ring Nightreign is set to immerse players in the dynamic world of Limveld, where they can explore and battle for survival either solo or in groups of three. However, duos will need to be prepared to include a third player, as there's no dedicated two-player option at launch.

In an interview with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki explained the decision to focus on solo and trio play. When asked about the absence of a two-player mode without a third matchmade player, Ishizaki admitted it was an oversight. "The simple answer is that this is something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we're very sorry about that," he stated. "As we said before, we set out to make this a multiplayer co-op game for three players, balanced for three players, so that was the main focus and it's at the core of Nightreign."

Ishizaki further elaborated on the game's design philosophy, emphasizing the effort put into creating a balanced experience for solo players. "Of course, I myself as a player understand that and often want times where I'm just playing myself, so this is something that we considered from the start," he said. "And so we did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed. So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well."

For those who enjoy playing in pairs, be ready to welcome a third player into your group. You might just find a skilled ally to enhance your gameplay experience.

Solo players can rest assured that Elden Ring Nightreign accommodates their playstyle. Ishizaki noted that the game's parameters "adjust dynamically depending on the number of players in that session," ensuring that lone wolves won't be overwhelmed. Solo players will also have access to self-revive options to aid their journey.

For those playing in trios, the game is designed to leverage the strengths of a three-player team, especially against the challenging bosses that await in Nightreign.

Elden Ring Nightreign will launch on May 30, 2025, and will be available on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X and S.
