"David Fincher and Brad Pitt's 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood' Sequel Heads to Netflix"

by Charlotte May 07,2025

David Fincher and Brad Pitt are set to collaborate once again, this time to bring a sequel to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood to life. According to The Playlist, the project, which is in development for Netflix, is based on a script by Tarantino that evolved from a previously shelved project known as The Movie Critic. This sequel, currently untitled, will see Pitt reprise his role as the stunt-double, Cliff Booth.

The script landed in Fincher's hands through an intriguing turn of events. Tarantino, who had originally planned The Movie Critic as his final film, decided to resurrect the story rather than let it fade away. Netflix reportedly acquired the screenplay for $20 million and is planning a $200 million budget, with filming set to begin in California in July. While no other casting has been confirmed, Leonardo DiCaprio is not expected to return as Rick Dalton. Fincher and Pitt are prioritizing this project over all others.

Deadline has also confirmed the development of the sequel, noting that Pitt received Tarantino's blessing to share the script with Fincher, leading to this unexpected collaboration.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, released in 2019, has been celebrated as a standout in Tarantino's oeuvre. The sequel faces the challenge of living up to its predecessor, which concluded with a definitive and impactful ending. However, the world of the original film has been further explored in Tarantino's 2021 novelization, which delves deeper into the 1960s California setting and sheds light on Cliff Booth's mysterious past, including the question of whether he killed his wife.

As anticipation builds for the sequel, fans can revisit Tarantino's thoughts on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and its place among his other works, as well as our original 7.8/10 review of the film.
