Simu Liu on Marvel Secrecy: 'Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo Ruined It for All of Us'

by Grace May 16,2025

It's official: Shang-Chi, portrayed by Simu Liu, is making a triumphant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The big reveal came during the Avengers: Doomsday livestream, where Liu's name was spotted alongside other MCU legends, though he remained tight-lipped about his involvement due to Marvel Studios' strict spoiler policies.

Last month's Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement was dominated by veteran X-Men actors, signaling a significant crossover event. Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden are all set to join the fray, confirming the X-Men's pivotal role in the film. Grammer, who played Beast in the Fox X-Men franchise, made his MCU debut in The Marvels' post-credits scene. Stewart, known for his role as Charles Xavier/Professor X, previously appeared in the MCU in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as part of the Illuminati. Meanwhile, McKellen (Magneto), Cumming (Nightcrawler), Romijn (Mystique), and Marsden (Cyclops) are yet to make their MCU debuts, raising the question: is Avengers: Doomsday secretly an Avengers vs. X-Men movie?

Simu Liu shared his excitement about being part of Avengers: Doomsday during an appearance on the Jennifer Hudson Show, though he admitted he was kept in the dark about the other cast members. "I knew I was going to be involved in it to some capacity," Liu said. "But I didn't know who else they were announcing. They don't tell us anything. Tom Holland and Mark Ruffalo ruined it for all of us. Now, they don't tell us." Liu's comments highlight the stringent measures Marvel has adopted to prevent leaks, particularly after Holland's and Ruffalo's well-known spoiler incidents.

Liu, who also starred as one of the Kens in Greta Gerwig's Barbie, was astounded to see the names of Sir Ian McKellen and Sir Patrick Stewart announced for the film. "These are two of the greatest actors to have ever walked the face of the Earth. That blew my mind a little bit," he remarked during the interview.

While fans eagerly await more details about Avengers: Doomsday, set to release on May 1, 2026, the film remains shrouded in mystery. However, with such a star-studded cast, the anticipation continues to build.

Meanwhile, MCU enthusiasts have also been buzzing about Robert Downey Jr.'s recent Doctor Doom-themed birthday invitation, adding another layer of intrigue to the ever-expanding Marvel universe.
