The Pokémon GO Tour Pass: A Free & Paid Option Explained

Many Pokémon GO players immediately ask about the price of new in-game items. The new Pokémon GO Tour Pass, however, is a surprising free offering – but what exactly does it entail?

Understanding the Pokémon GO Tour Pass

Introduced with the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova global event, the Tour Pass revolves around completing tasks to earn Tour Points. These points unlock rewards, boost your rank, and enhance event bonuses during the Unova event.

The standard Tour Pass is free and automatically granted to players starting February 24th at 10 AM local time. A paid version, the Tour Pass Deluxe ($14.99 USD or equivalent), offers an instant Victini encounter, upgraded rewards, and faster progression through the tiers.

Earning and Using Tour Points

Tour Points are earned through familiar in-game activities: catching Pokémon, completing raids, hatching eggs, and dedicated daily Pass Tasks. Accumulating points unlocks rewards, increases your rank, and unlocks better bonuses.

Higher ranks provide increased Catch XP bonuses during Pokémon GO Tour: Unova:

  • 1.5x Catch XP at Tier 2
  • 2x Catch XP at Tier 3
  • 3x Catch XP at Tier 4

Niantic has yet to reveal all rewards, promising further details. The free Pass's top tier currently offers a Zorua encounter with a special background. The Deluxe Pass culminates in a Lucky Trinket.

The Mystery of the Lucky Trinket

Exclusive to the Tour Pass Deluxe, the Lucky Trinket is a one-time-use item transforming a friend (at least Great Friends status) into a Lucky Friend. This allows a Lucky Pokémon trade without requiring Best Friend status. Note that Lucky Trinkets obtained during GO Tour: Unova expire on March 9, 2025.

Pokémon GO is available now.
