Pokémon TCG Gifts Tokens Amidst Ongoing Feature Debate

by Dylan Feb 20,2025

Creatures Inc., the developer of Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, has addressed player concerns regarding the recently implemented trading mechanic by gifting players 1,000 Trade Tokens. This is sufficient for only two substantial trades. The developer continues to investigate solutions to improve the controversial system.

Players logging in will find the tokens in their Gift menu without explanation. However, Creatures Inc. issued a statement on X/Twitter expressing gratitude for player feedback and patience. The trading feature's launch was met with significant criticism, with many labeling the system as "hilariously toxic," "predatory," and "downright greedy."

The trading mechanic, like other aspects of Pokémon TCG Pocket, incorporates restrictions limiting pack openings, Wonder Picking, and trading frequency without in-app purchases. The high cost of acquiring Trade Tokens – requiring the deletion of five cards to trade one of the same rarity – drew particular ire.

Over a week after the launch, Creatures Inc. acknowledged that the restrictions hinder casual enjoyment of the trading feature. While the developer promised to address these issues by offering necessary items as event rewards, the recent Cresselia ex Drop Event (February 3rd) failed to deliver on this promise.

Many believe the trading system is designed to boost revenue for Pokémon TCG Pocket, which reportedly generated $200 million in its first month, prior to the trading feature. This suspicion is fueled by the inability to trade cards of 2-Star rarity or higher, effectively forcing players to spend significant sums ($10, $100, or more) for a chance to obtain desired cards. One player reported spending approximately $1,500 to complete the first set.
