Overwatch 2 Extends 6v6 Playtest

Overwatch 2's Extended 6v6 Playtest and Potential Permanent Return

Overwatch 2's popular 6v6 playtest has received an extension due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Initially slated to end January 6th, the mode will now remain available until mid-season. Following this, it will transition to an open queue format, allowing 1-3 heroes per class per team. The possibility of 6v6 becoming a permanent fixture remains strong.

The 6v6 mode, initially introduced during last November's Overwatch Classic event, quickly gained immense popularity. Its initial run, though brief, established it as a top-played mode. A subsequent playtest, starting December 17th, was also met with enthusiastic reception.

Game Director Aaron Keller announced the extension via Twitter, citing continued player interest. While the precise end date remains unconfirmed, the mode will soon move to the Arcade section. The shift to open queue mid-season will maintain the core 6v6 gameplay but remove the role queue restrictions.

Arguments for a Permanent 6v6 Mode

The enduring success of 6v6 isn't unexpected. Since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch, the return of 6v6 has been a consistently sought-after feature. The shift to 5v5 gameplay, while a bold change, impacted gameplay in ways that resonate differently with various players.

The extended playtest fuels hopes for 6v6's permanent integration, potentially even within the competitive playlist. This possibility gains traction as the playtesting phase concludes.
