Marvel Rivals Issues Apology for Unfair Bans; Players Advocate for Rank-Inclusive Character Bans

NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, recently issued a public apology for mistakenly banning numerous innocent players. The incident involved a mass ban targeting suspected cheaters, which inadvertently flagged several non-Windows users employing compatibility layers like those used on macOS, Linux, and the Steam Deck.

The erroneous bans, implemented on January 3rd, were subsequently lifted after NetEase identified the cause. The company acknowledged the inconvenience and encouraged players to report genuine cheating behavior while offering an appeal process for wrongful bans. The reliance on compatibility layers, particularly Proton for SteamOS, has been identified as a potential trigger for false positives in the anti-cheat system.

Separately, a significant portion of the Marvel Rivals community is calling for the implementation of character bans across all ranks. Currently, this feature is only available at Diamond rank and above. Players argue that extending character bans to lower ranks would offer several benefits: it would provide valuable experience for newer players, facilitate more diverse team compositions beyond simple DPS setups, and create a more balanced competitive environment.

Reddit users have voiced their frustration, highlighting the difficulty of competing against overpowered characters in lower ranks. While NetEase hasn't yet publicly responded to these concerns, the demand for rank-inclusive character bans reflects a desire for a more equitable and strategically diverse gameplay experience for all players.
