"Mario Kart's Free Roam: An Open World Adventure with Friends"

by Ava May 16,2025

During today's Mario Kart World Direct, we finally received more detailed insights into the game's innovative Free Roam mode. This mode promises to be highly interactive, allowing players to explore and engage with the expansive world of Mario Kart World in multiplayer settings.

PlayWhile we had the opportunity to go hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, it wasn't until today that we got a comprehensive look at what Free Roam mode entails. This new feature sets Mario Kart World apart from its predecessors by allowing players to freely navigate a vast, Forza Horizon-inspired world map. Unlike previous Mario Kart games, where race tracks are isolated and accessible only during races, Mario Kart World integrates these tracks into a seamless open world. Players can drive from one track to another in certain game modes and enjoy the freedom to explore the areas in between.

In Free Roam mode, players can embark on mini-adventures when not racing. The world is dotted with hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, though the specific benefits of collecting these items remain a mystery for now. Additionally, P-Switches are scattered throughout the landscape, triggering small challenges like collecting blue coins when activated.

Free Roam mode also introduces a Photo Mode, enabling players to capture images of their racers in various poses and angles at any time. This mode is not limited to solo play; it supports multiplayer, allowing up to four players to roam together on the same system via split-screen, or up to eight players via local wireless play, with two players per system.

Today's Mario Kart World Direct also unveiled other exciting details, including new characters, courses, and modes. You can find a comprehensive overview of all the announcements right here.
