Mario Kart 9 Character Redesign Inspired by Super Mario Bros. Movie

by Simon Feb 19,2025

Nintendo's recent reveal of the Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart 9 has sparked excitement, but one detail has caught the eye of fans: Donkey Kong's significant redesign, seemingly influenced by The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The trailer showcased numerous characters, most appearing as expected. However, Donkey Kong's appearance is noticeably different from his established look in games like Mario Kart 8, Mario Tennis, and Donkey Kong Country Returns. His design has remained consistent for years, but the movie's successful reimagining has apparently inspired Nintendo to update his in-game appearance.

Although the Mario Kart 9 trailer offered only fleeting glimpses of Donkey Kong, the differences are already apparent. A more detailed comparison will be possible later.

Further details are anticipated during the Nintendo Switch 2 Nintendo Direct in April. The console reveal trailer provided limited information about the Switch 2, focusing primarily on its aesthetics. However, it confirmed backward compatibility, showcased a new button on the Joy-Cons, and validated a theory regarding controller-as-mouse functionality.

While a 2025 release window has been announced, the Nintendo Switch 2 likely won't launch before June due to numerous planned hands-on events worldwide, with registration opening shortly.
