"Killer Instinct Gold Joins Nintendo Switch Online Library"

by Daniel May 24,2025

Killer Instinct Gold has been freshly added to the Nintendo Switch Online library, bringing the iconic Nintendo 64 game to a new generation of players. This title is a port of the arcade classic Killer Instinct 2 and joins its predecessor, Killer Instinct, in the growing collection of retro games available exclusively to subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack.

Originally released in 1996, Killer Instinct Gold was crafted by the renowned British studio Rare, which had a strong partnership with Nintendo during that era. Rare is famous for developing beloved games like Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 007, and Perfect Dark. In Killer Instinct Gold, players can choose from a selection of 10 distinct fighters and engage in intense battles across various game modes, boasting an arsenal of "hundreds of thousands of moves and killer Combos at your fingertips."

Although Rare, and thus the Killer Instinct franchise, is now under Microsoft's wing, the addition of Killer Instinct Gold to the Switch's library marks another instance of an Xbox Game Studios title crossing over to the platform. Since the launch of the Xbox One with Killer Instinct in 2013, there have been no announcements from Microsoft about plans for a new sequel to the series.

Preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 opened at the end of April, with the console priced at $449.99. The preorders were met with overwhelming demand, as expected. However, Nintendo has cautioned U.S. customers who preordered via the My Nintendo Store that delivery on the release date might not be guaranteed due to high demand. Despite this, Doug Bowser, president of Nintendo of America, expressed confidence to IGN that Nintendo will have sufficient units to satisfy consumer demand "through the holidays."
