IDW's TMNT Reunites Brothers at IGN Fan Fest 2025
IDW has been nothing short of ambitious with its approach to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) franchise in recent years. In 2024, they relaunched the flagship TMNT comic under writer Jason Aaron, launched the sequel to the best-selling TMNT: The Last Ronin, and introduced a ninja-heavy crossover with TMNT x Naruto. As we move into 2025, the main TMNT series features a new regular artist and a fresh status quo. While the four Turtles are reunited, their relationships are strained, marking a new chapter in their saga.
At IGN Fan Fest 2025, we had the opportunity to discuss the future of these series with Jason Aaron and TMNT x Naruto writer Caleb Goellner. We explored how these narratives evolve, the overarching mission for the TMNT line, and the potential for reconciliation among Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo.
The Mission Statement of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
IDW's recent launch of multiple TMNT series, including the flagship monthly, has been a resounding success. The new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 sold approximately 300,000 copies, ranking among the top-selling comics of 2024. Jason Aaron shared that his guiding vision for the series is deeply rooted in the original Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird TMNT comics from the Mirage days.
"For me, on this book, the guiding principle was just looking back at that original series, the original Mirage Studios book," Aaron explained. "Last year marked the 40th anniversary of that series, which introduced the Turtles. Before the films or cartoons, it was that black and white Mirage Studios book that first captured my imagination. I wanted to recapture some of the grittiness and the action-packed scenes of those grimy turtles fighting ninjas in New York City alleyways."
Aaron aims to blend this classic spirit with a fresh narrative that reflects the Turtles' growth and current challenges. "We're telling a story that feels new and takes these characters forward after their previous adventures. It's about how they've grown up and are now trying to find their way back to being the heroes they need to be."

The success of TMNT #1 aligns with other major comic successes like Marvel’s Ultimate Universe line, DC’s Absolute line, and Skybound’s Energon Universe. These series tap into a demand for reboots and streamlined narratives that provide accessible entry points for fans.
"It certainly seems like there's a demand for such books," Aaron noted. "I was excited to work on Turtles and knew I could do something special. Working with a talented array of artists over the first six issues made the book incredibly exciting for me as both a long-time Turtles fan and a lover of good comic book stories."
A TMNT Family Reunion
Aaron's run began with the Turtles scattered across the globe, each dealing with their own struggles. By the end of the first storyline, they reunite in New York City, but the reunion is far from harmonious.
"It was fun writing those first four issues, showcasing each brother in unique situations," Aaron said. "But the real excitement comes from seeing how they interact once they're back together. Currently, they're not happy to see each other, and New York City itself has turned against them, thanks to a new villain from the Foot Clan."
Starting with issue #6, Juan Ferreyra takes over as the regular artist, bringing a consistent visual style to the series. "Juan's work is incredible," Aaron praised. "He's made the book his own, perfectly capturing the essence of the Turtles navigating the gritty streets of Manhattan."
Merging the TMNT and Naruto Universes
The TMNT x Naruto crossover, penned by Caleb Goellner and illustrated by Hendry Prasetya, blends the worlds of the Turtles and the Uzumaki Clan. Goellner credits Prasetya for the innovative redesigns that make the Turtles fit seamlessly into the Naruto universe.
"I couldn't be happier with the redesigns," Goellner said. "I had minimal input, just suggesting masks in the first issue. What they came back with was unreal. I hope these designs get turned into toys."
The crossover thrives on the dynamic interactions between characters from both franchises. Goellner enjoys seeing Kakashi's interactions with the younger characters, reflecting his own experiences as a parent. "I like seeing Kakashi with anyone. He's like my viewpoint character, managing all these kids. I also enjoy the chemistry between Raph and Sakura, both being the tough ones on their teams."

As the series progresses, the two ninja clans head to Big Apple Village, where they'll face a significant TMNT villain requested by Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto. "He had one request for this crossover: a specific villain for the Naruto characters to fight," Goellner teased. "It's going to be exciting, and I can't wait to see how fans react."
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #7 hit stores on February 26, while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Naruto #3 is set for release on March 26. Don't miss IGN's exclusive preview of the final chapter of TMNT: The Last Ronin II - Re-Evolution. Additionally, keep an eye out for IDW's new Godzilla shared universe and an upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog storyline, both featured at IGN Fan Fest 2025.
