Guerrilla Games' Horizon Multiplayer: Aiming High or Playing it Safe?

Guerrilla Games' upcoming Horizon multiplayer game is generating significant buzz, with recent indications suggesting either incredibly high player expectations or a proactive approach to avoid launch-day server issues. A recent job posting for a Senior Platform Engineer reveals a requirement for experience with "1M+ user globally distributed systems," hinting at a potential player base exceeding one million.

Since the release of Horizon Forbidden West and its Burning Shores DLC, Guerrilla has remained relatively quiet, focusing on collaborations like Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered and LEGO Horizon Adventures. However, evidence of a Horizon multiplayer game has been surfacing since 2018, with various job listings alluding to its development. The project's existence is now widely considered confirmed.

While the official announcement remains pending, the job posting's emphasis on scalability suggests ambitious player count projections. Guerrilla may be building a robust live-service infrastructure capable of handling over a million concurrent players.

Alternatively, this focus on scalability could be a preventative measure. The disastrous server issues experienced by Helldivers 2 at launch, due to unexpectedly high player numbers, serve as a cautionary tale. Guerrilla might be aiming to avoid similar problems for their Horizon title, ensuring a smooth launch experience for all players.

Given the game's years-long development and a previous job listing suggesting a new Horizon release in 2025, this multiplayer project could be the title in question. Assuming development is progressing smoothly, a reveal this year seems plausible. The scale of the planned infrastructure suggests a significant investment, regardless of whether it's driven by high expectations or a desire for a flawless launch.
