Unleash the Ghoul Within

Fallout 76's latest update, "The Ghoul Within," is now live, offering players the chance to experience the game as a Ghoul. According to a Bethesda article dated March 18, this update enriches the gameplay with ghoul-specific features, mechanics, and fresh cosmetic options to revamp your C.A.M.P.

To become a Ghoul, players must embark on the "Leap of Faith" questline, which leads them to a previously unexplored part of the Savage Divide. Here, they'll encounter new characters who assist in their Ghoulification process. As Ghouls, players gain exclusive abilities like Glow and Feral, alongside access to 30 unique Ghoul-exclusive Perks, or "Gherks."

The Feral ability replaces traditional hunger and thirst mechanics with a Feral meter that, when full, boosts various stats. However, letting it drop to 0% drastically changes gameplay, granting a +150% increase in Melee Damage while simultaneously reducing Endurance by -5, Charisma by -99, Max HP by -30, Max AP by -20, and both Hip-fire and V.A.T.S. Accuracy by -300%.

On the other hand, the Glow ability allows players to consume radiation, rendering them immune to diseases and mutations. It also makes players glow, increases their maximum health, heals damage, and enhances the effectiveness of Ghoul-exclusive Perks.

Players have 28 perks to choose from, plus two new legendary perks tailored for Ghouls. Note that Ghouls cannot access perks related to Hunger, Thirst, or Chem Resistance as these are irrelevant to their new state.

A Day In The Life of A Ghoul

Navigating the radiation-filled wasteland as a Ghoul is facilitated by the new abilities and Gherks. However, interactions with certain factions, like the Brotherhood of Steel, may become hostile, potentially blocking access to some quests.

To circumvent these limitations, players can seek assistance from a new NPC, Jaye, who provides disguises to interact with restricted content. If the Ghoul lifestyle doesn't suit you, players can revert to human form via the Character Screen. This is a one-time option, as the "Leap of Faith" questline cannot be repeated. However, players can purchase a Ghoul Retransformation for 1000 Atoms.

The update also includes essential bug fixes, combat balancing, weapon damage adjustments, and accessibility enhancements. Bethesda has also announced the next update, "The Big Bloom," set for April 29, as part of their season calendar.

Since its launch in November 2018, Fallout 76 has overcome initial challenges, now boasting a "Mostly Positive" rating on Steam with 76% positive reviews. The game is playable on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.
