Catch Bagon and Evolve It: Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Guide

by Owen Feb 19,2025

This guide details how to obtain Bagon, Shelgon, and Salamence in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Bagon is exclusive to Pokémon Violet, requiring trading or Pokémon HOME transfer to obtain it in Scarlet.

Locating Bagon in Pokémon Violet

Several locations yield Bagon in Pokémon Violet:

  • East Province (Area Three): This expansive area, rich in explorable caves, offers high chances of encountering Bagon.
  • South Province (Area Five): A fixed spawn Bagon resides atop a mountain southwest of the bridge connecting the grassy and rocky regions.
  • Dalizapa Passage: Located north of the Great Crater and south of Glaseado Mountain, this area features a deep hole (accessible by Koraidon/Miraidon or via cavern entrances) containing various rare Pokémon, including Bagon and Frigibax.
  • 3-Star Tera Raids: Once you've earned three Gym Badges, participate in 3-star Tera Raids for a chance to encounter Bagon (Tera Type may vary). These raids may also yield Bagon with its Hidden Ability.

Acquiring Bagon in Pokémon Scarlet

Since Bagon isn't naturally found in Pokémon Scarlet, trading with a Violet player or using Pokémon HOME is necessary:

Trading: Utilize the Union Circle to connect with other players and trade. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online features.

Pokémon HOME Transfer:

  1. Open Pokémon HOME and select the game containing your Bagon.
  2. Move Bagon to the Basic Box. Save and exit.
  3. Open your Pokémon Scarlet file and transfer Bagon from the Basic Box to a PC Box. Save and exit.

Evolving Bagon

Bagon Evolution

  • Bagon to Shelgon: Level up Bagon to level 30.
  • Shelgon to Salamence: Level up Shelgon to level 50. Exp. Candy (L, XL, or M) significantly accelerates this process. Auto-battling against appropriate-level Pokémon (like Chansey, found in various locations) is also effective. 4-star and 5/6-star Tera Raids also offer chances to obtain Shelgon and Salamence, respectively.

Salamence: Strengths, Weaknesses, and Movesets

Salamence Stats

Salamence, a Dragon/Flying pseudo-legendary (600 base stat total), excels as a physical attacker (Adamant or Lonely Nature recommended). Its high Attack stat makes physical moves like Dragon Claw ideal. Iron Head (TM099) counters its Fairy and Rock weaknesses. Alternatively, a special attacker build (Timid Nature) can leverage moves like Draco Meteor and Flamethrower.
