Baldur's Gate 3 Updates Near End as Dev Focuses on Next Game

by Benjamin Feb 20,2025

Larian Studios, the developer behind the critically acclaimed Baldur's Gate 3, has announced a media blackout, signaling a complete shift in focus to their next, unannounced project. While Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 8 is slated for release later this year, Larian's full attention is now dedicated to this new endeavor.

Swen Vincke, Larian's CEO, recently acknowledged the studio's remarkable success with Baldur's Gate 3 but confirmed that the journey continues. In a statement to VideoGamer, Larian officially declared a media blackout, emphasizing their complete dedication to their next title.

Details about this new game remain scarce. Larian has confirmed it won't be a Baldur's Gate sequel or any other D&D-related project. Instead, it's an entirely original creation, a departure chosen after internal efforts to generate enthusiasm for a Baldur's Gate follow-up proved unsuccessful.

Previous statements from Vincke offer only vague hints. In November 2023, he hinted at a project pushing boundaries, expressing considerable excitement. Earlier, in July 2023, he mentioned the possibility of a new Divinity: Original Sin game, but emphasized that it wouldn't be the immediate next project. He highlighted the immense effort poured into Baldur's Gate 3, suggesting a period of creative rejuvenation is needed before tackling another major title.

The nature of Larian's next game remains a mystery. Given their established expertise in fantasy RPGs, a shift to science fiction, a contemporary setting, or even a completely new genre is entirely possible. However, it's likely to be some time – potentially years – before any concrete information is revealed.
